I was conflicted on whether or not to visit the hill tribes here in Chiang Mai, Thailand. I heard stories about tourists who caused havoc due to being ignorant of the tribes’ customs. I decided I would check out a government funded village where 7 tribes live together voluntarily. They are provided free education for their children and live rent free in exchange for informing people of their customs. This woman is part of the Karen Long Neck tribe and was happy to pose for a photo and show us her handicrafts. The women in this tribe begin wearing the golden rings at age 5.
If you would like to visit, I recommend you do some reading to understand their history and why they’re there. Also find a reputable company to take you to Baan Tong Luang or go on your own. It’s better if the money goes directly to the women.
