Edinburgh, you’re so poetic.
Farewell to the Highlands, farewell to the North,
The birth-place of Valour, the country of Worth;
Wherever I wander, wherever I rove,
The hills of the Highlands for ever I love. – Robert Burns
In November, I was on a plane to see a friend in Edinburgh, Scotland, planned just a few short weeks beforehand. It was top of my list of places I wanted to see next, so I was excited! The guidebook couldn’t prepare me for how beautiful it was. From Old Town to the Highlands, it was breathtaking! How many times I’m going to use that word on this site, who knows?!
Castles Upon Castles
I’m a sucker for a good castle, and Scotland did not disappoint! Edinburgh Castle was done up all pretty for the tourists while Doune castle, best known from Monty Python and the Holy Grail, was completely bare bones. Doune castle, about an hour outside of Edinburgh, was just raw stones, dark and dank. With an excellent audio guide, it was transformed and visitors could get a feel for how the rooms were used, both in the real life middle ages, and in the Monty Python movie.
